McCartney, 31, has signed a two-year contract with the Hammers, returning to the club for a third time having played for them between 2006 and 2008 and then on a short-term deal in 2011-12.

"I am delighted to be coming back to West Ham and this time on a permanent basis," McCartney said. "It was great to be part of the side that won promotion for the club last season.

"It was a fantastic way to end the campaign last year and I am really looking forward to being back in the Premier League with West Ham."

The Northern Ireland defender, who won West Ham's Players' Player of the Year award last season for the part he played in the club regaining their top-flight status, becomes Sam Allardyce's fourth summer signing after the arrivals of Jussi Jaaskelainen, Stephen Henderson and Mohamed Diame from Bolton, Portsmouth and Wigan respectively.
