Argentinian giants River Plate are back in the Primera Division after former France international David Trezeguet scored a brace to take them up at the first attempt.

River were relegated for the first time in their110-year history 12 months ago but have returned to Argentina's elite division as Primera B Nacional champions.

Trezeguet scored twice in the second-half to give Matias Almeyda's side a 2-0 victory over Almirante Brown and ensure they finished top of the second-tier pile ahead of Quilmes.

Emotional scenes followed the final whistle, with River Plate president and former national team boss Daniel Passarella descibing the club as having "woken from a nightmare".

River boss Almeyda broke down in tears after the game, saying: "We suffered until today's match but we have put River Plate back in the place where they must be.

"Today is the end of the difficult time that we and the River fans have experienced. Thanks to the fans who were with us all the time, for their patience."
