Barry ruled out of Euro 2012

Manchester City's Gareth Barry has been officially ruled out of the 2012 European Championship.

The midfielder picked up an abdominal injury during England's 1-0 win over Norway on Saturday. He was sent for a scan on Monday, with the results confirming he would not be fit to take his seat on the plane to Poland and Ukraine.

"I'm very disappointed to lose Gareth, not only was he a member of my original 23-man squad but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years," Hodgson said. "I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament but I'm sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros. I wish him a speedy recovery."

Hodgson has not gone for a like-for-like replacement, with Everton's defender Phil Jagielka handed a place in the squad.

England have one more warm-up game, against Belgium, before opening up their Euro 2012 campaign against France on June 11.
