Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is hopeful the current Gunners skipper, Robin van Persie, remains at Emirates Stadium.

Van Persie's future at Arsenal is the subject of intense conjecture ahead of his contract expiring in the summer of 2013.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is reported to have held talks with the Dutchman this month, but it has been claimed no resolution over a new contract was agreed.

Fabregas opted to leave Arsenal last summer as he sealed a transfer to Barcelona, but the Spaniard is keen to see his former team-mate stay in North London.

The midfielder said: "As an Arsenal fan I would be happy if he stayed in London to help Arsenal win titles."

Meanwhile, ex-Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira, now football development executive at Manchester City, believes there will be a long list of suitors for Van Persie, should he decide to seek pastures new.

"I don't think it will only be City who would like these kind of players," Vieira said.

"I don't think you have so many good talents like Van Persie who have just one year left on his contract. There will be a lot of teams who will want a player like Van Persie."
