Mixed news for Sweden Euros squad

ESPN staff

Manchester City starlet John Guidetti has been omitted from Sweden's 23-man Euro 2012 squad after a thigh injury ruled him out of competing at next month's finals, though fellow forward Johan Elmander has been included.

Guidetti, 20, has enjoyed a sensational season on loan at Dutch side Feyenoord - scoring 20 goals in 23 games - and Sweden coach Erik Hamren had been prepared to unleash him at the European Championship.

But the young striker will not make it to Ukraine and Poland due to an inflamed nerve in his thigh muscle, leaving Markus Rosenberg to return to the Sweden fold for the first time in three years in his place.

There is better injury news regarding Galatasaray frontman Elmander, who is expected to recover from a fractured foot in time for the tournament, and Hamren is confident that his squad is capable of progressing from a group containing England, Ukraine and France.

"It will be an exciting challenge," Hamren said. "It is a tough and uncertain group. We could play three really good matches and still not progress. Our first ambition is to qualify for a quarter-final. But if we do, we will not start celebrating. We dream of medals."

Veteran centre-back Olof Melberg will be making his fourth European Championship appearance, while Anders Svensson, Kim Kallstrom, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andreas Isaksson and Christian Wilhelmsson are all set for their third outings at the continental finals.

Goalkeepers: Andreas Isaksson (PSV), Johan Wiland (FC Copenhagen), Pär Hansson (Helsingborgs).
