Cologne were relegated to the 2. Bundesliga under a black cloud after going down to a thumping 4-1 defeat at home to Bayern Munich on the final day of the season.

Needing to win the game to secure a place in a play-off to avoid relegation, Frank Schafer's side were unable to get the better of their own nerves and succumbed to two goals from Thomas Muller, a Pedro Geromel own goal and an Arjen Robben strike.

Milivoje Novakovic scored a consolation for the home side, who had to run for the safety of the dressing rooms with Bayern's players at the final whistle as the home fans' anger overspilled.

Cologne's defeat opened the door for Hertha Berlin, and they gave themselves a second chance to save their Bundesliga status as they beat Hoffenheim 3-1 to earn a place in the relegation play-offs.

Anis Ben-Hatira put the home side in front in the 14th minute, adding a second 12 minutes from time. Marvin Compper pulled one back for Hoffenheim, who lost Ryan Babel to an early red card, before Raffael sealed the victory with the last kick of the game, sparking celebrations inside the Olympiastadion as Berlin moved above Cologne into 16th place.

Borussia Dortmund celebrated winning their second successive Bundesliga title in style with a record-breaking 4-0 win over Freiburg.

Two goals apiece from Jakub Blaszczykowski and Robert Lewandowski earned Jurgen Klopp's side a comfortable victory on the final day of the season, extending their unbeaten run to a record 28 matches and taking them to a new league record of 81 points.

It was a one-sided game to round off a dominant season from Dortmund, who picked up the trophy in front of over 80,000 fans at the Westfalenstadion.

Stefan Kiessling scored a hat-trick as Bayer Leverkusen secured automatic qualification for the Europa League with a 4-1 win at Nurnberg.

Kiessling opened the scoring in the sixth minute and then made it 2-0 after 32 minutes. Robert Mak pulled a goal back for after 58 minutes, but Andre Schurrle restored the visitors' two-goal lead in the 77th minute and Kiessling completed his treble a minute from time.

Leverkusen finished the season in fifth place with 54 points, good enough for European football, while Nurnberg ended in tenth.

Schalke finished their season with a 3-2 victory at Werder Bremen as Klaas Jan Huntelaar struck two goals to win the Bundesliga goal scoring title.

Julian Draxler opened the scoring for Schalke in the 30th minute before Claudio Pizarro equalised in the 42nd minute from the spot. Huntelaar scored in the 65th and 74th minute to give Schalke a 3-1 lead, which Pizarro cut to 3-2 in the 82nd minute.

Schalke had already secured third place in the Bundesliga and a direct spot in the Champions League next season, but Huntelaar's 28th and 29th goals gave him the scoring crown ahead of Bayern Munich's Mario Gomez, who had 26 goals this season. Bremen slumped to ninth in the league with 42 points.

Marco Reus scored two goals and set up a third in his final game for Borussia Monchengladbach as they won 3-0 at Mainz.

Reus opened the scoring in the 31st minute and made it 2-0 after 62 minutes. He then set up Igor de Camargo to push the advantage to 3-0 soon after. Only a year after almost suffering relegation, Gladbach finish the season fourth with a place in the Champions League qualifiers.

Stuttgart scored three goals inside six minutes to turn a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 victory at home to Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg went ahead 2-0 through goals by Patrick Helmes in the 28th minute and Marco Russ in the 60th minute. But when Cacau pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute it sparked a stunning turnaround as Maza equalised in the 77th minute before Ibrahima Traore's winner.

Even so, the win was not enough to realise Stuttgart's dream of nicking an automatic place in the Europa League as they finished sixth to go into the qualifiers. The result left Wolfsburg out of European competition next season.

Hannover also qualified for Europe after they too came from behind to see off relegated Kaiserslautern 2-1.

Pierre De Wit gave the visitors a surprise early lead but Hannover hit back thanks to an own goal by Alexander Bugera and Didier Ya Konan's strike.

Augsburg celebrated their survival with a 1-0 win over Hamburg on the final day of their maiden year in the top flight of German football.

On-loan forward Koo Ja Cheol scored the only goal of the game in the 34th minute to seal the most successful season in Augsburg's history, and complete the worst season in the history of Hamburg.
