Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has been called up by England to face Netherlands on Wednesday night after Glen Johnson became the fifth player to withdraw from the squad.

Johnson took part in a training session on Tuesday in preperation for the friendly at Wembley but it was later revealed he would be playing no part against the World Cup runners-up.

The Liverpool defender, who won the Carling Cup on Sunday, is the second right-back to be ruled out but with Micah Richards, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all capable of operating in the role, Pearce has opted to draft in Lescott, a surprise omission in the first place.

Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent, Kyle Walker and Tom Cleverley have also pulled out of the England party - although in those instances, Pearce opted not to call-up a replacement.
