Italy coach Cesare Prandelli believes there is still a chance that sidelined duo Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano could feature at Euro 2012, while he also refused to rule out the possibility of recalling former Azzurri stars Antonio Di Natale and Francesco Totti for the tournament.
Villarreal striker Rossi and AC Milan forward Cassano led Italy's line through an unbeaten qualifying campaign but both are major doubts for this summer's finals because of a knee injury and heart problem respectively.
But Prandelli will wait as long as possible on the pair's fitness as he is keen to have them on board for in Poland and Ukraine.
"Rossi is recovering," Prandelli told Sky Sport Italia. "We'll wait until the very last moment to have him back. It's the same for Cassano."
With question marks hanging over the fitness of Rossi and Cassano, there have been calls to select Di Natale, who has scored 19 goals in 24 games for Udinese this season. He last played for the Azzurri in the final group game of their disastrous 2010 World Cup campaign.
That appearance is at least more recent than Totti. The Roma captain has not represented the national team since the triumphant 2006 World Cup final, but a series of impressive performances in 2011-12 have seen the media clamouring for a recall, and Prandelli insists the door is open to both players.
"At the end of the [Serie A] championship we'll have a look and evaluate which players have had a certain kind of consistency," Prandelli said.
"Is there a possibility that we can see Totti and Di Natale? Yes, absolutely."
