Sergio van Dijk's hot form continued, the Holland-born striker netting his sixth goal in five games in the 57th minute as United looked set to be rewarded for a dominant performance in the regional game.
Jets coach Gary van Egmond brought ex-Arsenal and Everton striker Francis Jeffers on with half an hour to go in an effort to add some firepower up front.
But it was fellow second-half substitute Jobe Wheelhouse who provided the Jets a lifeline after getting on the end of a Ruben Zadkovich cross to level in the 72nd minute.
The draw saw Adelaide move into seventh but left them three points adrift of sixth-placed Sydney FC, while the Jets remained ninth.
