Napoli have won the race to sign Universidad de Chile star Eduardo Vargas, the Italian club's president has announced.

• Chelsea target Vargas is Napoli-bound

Vargas was being tracked by a number of Europe's top clubs, including Chelsea, but will join Champions League side Napoli when the Chilean domestic season finishes in the New Year.

Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis told Radio Marte: "I would like to officially announce we have signed Vargas. A few minutes ago, I was called by doctor De Nicola, who visited the player and gave a green light about his physical shape.

"We have signed the contracts, and we have beaten competition from very strong clubs to sign the player. This is evidence that we are always on the lookout for young talents from around the world who can help improve our squad."

The 22-year-old Chile international is likely to be the only singing to arrive at the San Paolo stadium this winter.

"I think our market will close here," said Napoli's sporting director Riccardo Bigon. "The group is big enough and after the winter break we will also have (Miguel) Britos and (Marco) Donadel back. They will feel like two new signings as they have not played yet."
