Argentina FA, players' union reach deal to end strike, resume season

The Argentina Football Federation and the players' union on Wednesday reached a preliminary agreement that ends the players' strike and opens the door for a restart of the season on Thursday.

The two sides are set to meet in the Department of Labour to sign a new agreement.

A players' strike over unpaid wages stopped the start of the second half of the Argentina football season since March 3, with two first division games postponed. Union leader Sergio Marchi had said the season would not start until clubs paid millions in salaries owed to players.

The Argentina government last week agreed to pay the clubs $22.7 million as compensation for the termination of a TV contract that was held by the government.
