Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Gray is hoping to welcome defender Glenn Loovens back into his squad for the clash with Wigan.

The 30-year-old centre-back has missed the Owls' last two matches with a hamstring injury but is edging closer to making a return, while Giles Coke and Jermaine Johnson are still suspended.

Gray is waiting to hear whether on-loan Cardiff defender Adedeji Oshilaja, who was brought in to ease the injury crisis at Hillsborough, will receive international clearance in time to feature.

Fellow defenders Oguchi Onyewu (calf), Reda Johnson (hip), Martin Taylor (knee) and Kamil Zayatte (ankle) remain out, so midfielder Jose Semedo, who filled in at centre-back against Reading on Saturday, could continue in defence if Loovens and Oshilaja are not available.

Top scorer Nick Powell will again be Wigan's biggest concern.

The on-loan Manchester United forward, who has scored 10 goals in 29 games, has missed Latics' last two games with a hamstring problem and the short turnaround may work against him.

Defenders Ivan Ramis (knee) and Thomas Rogne (soft-tissue injury) are both back in full training but Uwe Rosler is always patient with players returning from long-term problems, while new signing Markus Holgersson must overcome a virus if he is to make his debut.

The trip to Hillsborough will be Wigan's 40th game of the season so far and club captain Gary Caldwell (Achilles) has not featured in one contest, while Shaun Maloney (shoulder) is another long-term absentee.
