Former Austria goalkeeper Alexander Manninger is on the verge of making his Bundesliga debut at the age of 35, having joined struggling Augsburg until the end of the season.

The former Arsenal and Juventus keeper has joined the bottom-placed club as cover for regular number one Simon Jentzsch, who has been ruled out until the end of the year with a finger injury.

Since he has not played since appearing for Juve against Manchester City in the Europa League in December 2010, the chances of him making his debut in tomorrow's clash with Borussia Monchengladbach are slim, but he has made it clear he has not arrived just to keep the bench warm.

"I never heard any number when I signed my contract,'' he said. "I have the number 21 on my shirt, am a player of Augsburg and it's up to the coach to decide on the rest.''

Mohamed Amsif is instead the man Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl is continuing to keep his faith in.

"The coach has made it clear that I am the number one and Alex is back-up who will come in if anything happens,'' said the 23-year-old.

But with experience of a relegation battle in Serie A with Siena, Manninger should prove a positive influence.

"I just need to get myself match fit as quickly as possible,'' said the Austrian, who has been without a club since being released by Italian champions Juve in the summer.

"The coming weeks are certainly going to be challenging, but we have all hands on deck pulling in the same direction.''

Gladbach also have an extra man on deck with Igor de Camargo's two goals against AEL Limassol in the Europa League on Thursday night showing that he too still has a role to play with the club.

"That was a signal from me today,'' he said after his goals booked the Foals a place in the knockout stage of the competition.

"Of course I always want to play because I can't do so much from the bench.

"It is great to be able to help the team again with goals - I always want that, either providing assists or scoring the goals.''

His return to form leaves coach Lucien Favre with a selection headache tomorrow.

"It's a good sign when there is a lot of competition for places within the team,'' added De Camargo, who can look forward to a starting berth.
