Hoffenheim travel to Eintracht Frankfurt without Marvin Compper after his future at the club was left in doubt when he was dropped to the reserve team this week.
The club's general manager Andreas Muller claims the decision to omit the defender was down to Compper. Muller claims Compper said he had no interest in staying at a club fighting to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga.
Muller said: "And you can go and ask any of the lads in the dressing room if Compper said that.
"I am working for the good of the club and I need to make sure we make it in the end.
"We need dedication, loyalty, performance and motivation and we say that to the lads every day.
"If somebody is not prepared to fight this survival battle and go through this time of suffering, which may even mean taking a place on the bench, then they have no place here.
"We have made it clear that, in such a situation, we cannot do with a player who is not full of motivation.''
Hoffenheim stand 16th in the Bundesliga, eight points from safety and in the relegation play-off position.
Compper told the Rhein-Neckar Zeitung newspaper that Muller's version of events is false.
"I am not one who runs away,'' he said. "It's totally rubbish to claim that I couldn't be bothered to play in a relegation battle.
"The new coach (Marco Kurz) made it clear to me from day one, without explicitly saying it, that I an not his first choice for the centre of the defence.
"I felt like a back-up solution. I have been fair and to the point with the club and I am not going to be made out to be an angry child.
"I have been here for five years and the club is anything but meaningless to me.''
New signing David Abraham should take Compper's place although Afriyie Acquah, who joined from Palermo yesterday, could be an alternative.
Hosts Frankfurt will be looking for a repeat of their 4-0 win in Hoffenheim earlier this season as they aim to bounce back from defeat to Bayer Leverkusen and defend their place inside the top four.
