Montpellier coach Rene Girard is determined to keep his side's focus fixed on what he expects to be a tough game against newly-promoted Reims tomorrow night and not let thoughts stray to next week's Champions League debut.

Montpellier, courtesy of their maiden Ligue 1 title last season, will feature in the Champions League group stages for the first time and their opening match sees them host Arsenal next Tuesday.

That is undoubtedly going to be a memorable occasion for the club, but before then they must travel to top-flight newcomers Reims as they seek to continue their climb up the Ligue 1 standings.

After taking just one point from their opening three games, the champions claimed their first win with a 3-1 triumph at Sochaux last time out, a result that left them level on four points with Reims, who have also improved after losing their first two fixtures.

Girard said: "I think it's important that you get used to these games that precede high-level matches. That's why we are completely focused on this game, because it will be complicated.''

He added: "There is always a difficulty with matches in quick succession. Our preparation has not been the easiest, because of players being away with their countries.

"The best way to prepare is to take the matches one at a time. In addition to this international week, the players will have little rest between games, so we will have to be vigilant.''

Reims started their campaign with defeats to Marseille and Bastia but since then they have beaten Sochaux and drawn with Toulouse.

The club now have three successive home games in the league and cup to build on those results, but like his Montpellier counterpart, Reims coach Hubert Fournier is not looking beyond the first match.

"We have a big challenge ahead. But before thinking about the other two matches, it's the one against Montpellier that concerns me. This team are not champions of France by accident,'' he said.

"It will take a very good Reims to not only nullify their attacks but also cause them problems as soon as we have the chance.''
