Bordeaux boss Francis Gillot admits his side's great form in Ligue 1 has taken him by surprise.

Les Girondins go into tomorrow's match against struggling champions Montpellier in second place in the table, one point behind Lyon, after three successive league victories in which they have not conceded a goal.

Bordeaux also secured their progress through to the knockout stages of the Europa League on Thursday with a 2-1 win over Club Brugge despite resting star duo Yoan Gouffran and Ludovic Obraniak.

The pair will return tomorrow, and Gillot said of Bordeaux's start to the season on www.ligue1.com: "It's almost unexpected as we're also playing in Europe and that takes a lot of energy.

"Our current position in the table is important for our confidence. It raises the prospect of an interesting end to the season. We're on a good run. We've got the best defensive record and Gouffran is giving us a lot.''

In contrast, Montpellier have struggled since starting the defence of their title and sit in 14th, only two places above the relegation zone.

They have drawn their last three league matches 1-1 and Wednesday's 2-0 defeat by Arsenal confirmed they will finish bottom of their Champions League group.

Manager Rene Girard said: "When we started to tire, things got tough. Perhaps this was a game too far given the injuries and key players we're missing right now. I'm really proud of my players, though.''

Montpellier have disciplinary problems for tomorrow's match, with Jamel Saihi and Cyril Jeunechamp both suspended, but Younes Belhanda returns from a ban while Vitorino Hilton is an injury doubt.
