Nice defender Romain Genevois is keeping one eye on the bottom of the table as he refuses to become complacent about the second half of the Ligue 1 season.
Nice return to league action tomorrow against Valenciennes on the back of a 3-2 Coupe de France victory over third-tier Metz last weekend.
The Cote d'Azur-based side are sitting relatively comfortably in the middle of the overall standings, but Genevois, who joined the club last summer, knows last season saw eight teams fighting to avoid relegation, of which Nice were one.
"We must see things in order,'' Genevois told the club's official website.
"Today the situation is favourable but a short series of poor results is enough to return us to the starting point.
"We want to start the new year with a win at home.''
Nice and Valenciennes both have 29 points, with sixth-placed Nice three positions above the northern France club thanks to a superior goal difference.
Valenciennes lost their Coupe de France match to FC Istres on penalties last weekend, but manager Daniel Sanchez expects his team to bounce back immediately against Nice.
"There was disappointment after the Cup match, but us going out must serve at least one good purpose and that is a reaction in the league,'' Sanchez told Va-fc.com.
"It must start with a good foundation. There is no reason for us to lose confidence. To do this, taking points from Nice would be the best thing.
"We know it will be a tough game, but they took a point away from home (last August) and there is no reason why we can not do the same or better.''
