Robin Van Persie is facing a race against time to be fit for the penultimate match of Holland's World Cup qualifying campaign against Hungary in Amsterdam on Friday night.

The Manchester United striker is suffering with a toe injury and is unlikely to be risked by Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal, with qualification for the finals as Group F winners already assured.

The news will come as some relief to Sandor Egervari's Hungary who go into the game in the play-off position but just a single point ahead of group rivals Turkey and Romania.

The Hungarians know if they can become the first team to beat the Dutch in this campaign it will almost certainly be enough to seal their play-off place with just a final game against Andorra to come.

But their already slim chances have been hit by the absence of striker Adam Szalai who is suffering from a fever, and Dinamo Moscow midfielder Balasz Dzsudzsak warned of the size of his side's task.

Dzsudzsak said: "I hope we will make some beautiful memories on Friday but we will play one of the best teams in the world and sometimes that is not enough even if you give 100 per cent.

"A number of us lacked the will and determination after our last game against Romania and now we must be prepared to go out there and give our all.''

Dutch coach Van Gaal has signalled his intention to experiment but he will be mindful of the need to finish the group in style with seedings still up for grabs for the finals in Brazil last summer.

His side have stumbled over the line with a surprise draw in Estonia followed by a less than convincing 2-0 win over Andorra, results which will provide the Hungarians with a glimmer of hope.
