Wolfsburg forward Ivica Olic says it is "always special'' to play against his former club Hamburg as he looks to get one over them once again on Friday night.

Olic scored 29 goals in two seasons for the northern Germany club before moving to Bayern Munich, where he enjoyed, in his own words, "the best season of my career'' in 2009/10.

Injury at the end of that year ruled him out for practically all of the subsequent season, but he is enjoying a new lease of life with the Wolves, scoring six goals so far this season and now looking to edge them closer to the top four with victory at the VW-Arena.

"I've got to be honest and say games against HSV are always special,'' he told the official Hamburg website.

"Playing at home for Wolfsburg, the feeling is not so strong as when I play in Hamburg, when I remember the great time I had at HSV and the super atmosphere even more.

"I find it a shame that Hamburg have not been able to latch onto our successes from back then recently. They are not playing where they belong, given their potential.

"I therefore hope that Hamburg will soon start playing a leading role again in the Bundesliga and in Europe.''

That will have to wait until after Friday night, although Olic says he is impressed by the current Hamburg team.

"I have a lot of respect for them,'' he said. "But we are at home and, apart from against Braunschweig, we have not lost any games and that gives me hope that we will win this one too.

"I wish Hamburg all the best for the rest of the season, but I want to win on Friday.''

Hamburg will once again be without their captain Rafael van der Vaart, who may return for the DFB-Pokal tie with Cologne in midweek, but Jonathan Tah is now an established fixture in the defence after signing a new contract.

"He is a great talent and, although there is a lot of pressure on him, he remains calm and performs all the time,'' said Hamburg coach Bert van Marwijk.

Petr Jiracek is also a doubt for Hamburg, but Tolgay Arslan is back from suspension and set to start.

Hamburg are currently 11th in the Bundesliga, seven points behind their hosts with four games to go before the winter break.
