Portugal referees poised for strike action over club and player complaints

Referees in Portugal have said they will strike next month if clubs, coaches and players continue to excessively complain about their performances.

The officials also want action taken to reinforce punishment for those who break ethical and disciplinary regulations put in place to protect officials.

The Portuguese Association of Football Referees released a statement on Thursday saying it would not tolerate any more "insinuations" about referees trying to benefit certain clubs or being involved in corruption.

The strike threat comes after widespread complaints and criticism by clubs following refereeing mistakes in the Portuguese league's top division this season.

The association said the strike would take effect on the weekend of Dec. 15.
