Giovani made headlines worldwide during his participation with the Mexican national team in the U-17 World Cup in Peru 2005. Mexico defeated Brazil 3-0 in the final and, individually, Giovani took the Silver Ball, given to the second-best player of that competition.

A move to Spanish side Barcelona quickly followed and after spending two years in the youth system, or Cantera, he made his debut for the senior side in September 2007 against Athletic Bilbao. However, after winning a senior call for Mexico he was impatient to wait for similar recognition at Barca and looked for a move abroad.

Tottenham came calling in June 2008 but after some impressive displays in pre-season he failed to meet the standard in the Premier League and was sent out on loan to Ipswich Town in March 2009 and then to Turkish side Galatasaray in January 2010.

In the meantime, he became an undisputable part of the Mexican national team. Coach Javier Aguirre gave him continuity and Giovani was one of the stars for El Tri at the World Cup. He is back at Tottenham for the 2010/11 season.

Strengths: His great speed and his excellent control of the ball, plus he has a good shot from distance

Weaknesses: Doesn't have a great physical presence. He has suffered several injuries in the past few years, which have kept him inactive.

Career high: In the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Giovani established himself as one of Mexico's star performers under coach Javier Aguirre and was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

Career low: Between 2007 and 2008 he had his worst time at Barcelona because he was unable to claim a regular place in the team.

Style: A daring player who makes great use of his left foot, he is able to attack from both sides of the pitch, and is explosive in the last 30 metres.
