Signed from PSV Eindhoven for around £7 million in 2008, Gomes recovered superbly from a quite horrific start to his career at Tottenham to establish himself as the clear number one at the club.

Initially, this former Cruzeiro player looked as if he was set to go down in history as one of the worst 'keepers ever to grace the English top flight, with his howling errors on a weekly basis suggesting his stay at White Hart Lane would be painful and brief.

However, by the end of 2010 he was in fine form, making a string of saves to help Spurs pick up their first League victory over Arsenal in 21 meetings and then making two world class saves against in a 1-0 win against Manchester City which booked a place in the Premier League top four.

His impressive performances also caught the eye of Brazil coach Dunga who selected Gomes in his squad for the 2010 World Cup, although the keeper only played in a pre-tournament game.

Strengths: A superb shot stopper who can pull of some truly jaw-dropping saves. He also has a good command of his area.

Weaknesses: He can flap at the occasional cross and gets frustrated with himself. Emotions often run high and he has been seen crying on the pitch on more than one occasion.

Career high: Gomes won four Dutch Eredivise titles in a row (2004–05, 2005–06, 2006–07 and 2007–08) during his time at PSV.

Career low: His awful start at White Hart Lane - which included a terrible mistake against Aston Villa and an own goal against Fulham - led Tottenham Hotspur to sack goalkeeping coach Hans Leitert.
