MAICON
A threat bursting forward, Maicon's attacking verve is vital for both club and country sides that rely on playing counter-attacking football and hitting teams with pace down the flanks.
Having began his career at Cruzeiro, he nearly joined Manchester United in 2004, only for work permit issues to get in the way of his switch to England, and he ended up starting his European club career with Monaco. By then, he was already a full Brazil international and attracting praise for his dynamic style of play.
The full-back moved to Inter Milan in 2006 and blossomed under the tutelage of tactical master Jose Mourinho, winning four League titles, an Italian Cup and the Champions League.
Strengths: A fast and powerful runner with bags of stamina, his strenth and skill on the ball make him a useful outlet on the flank. He also has an eye for spectacular goals.
Weaknesses: Can be caught out of position due to his attacking nature and is also a little hot-headed.
Career high: Winning the Treble with Inter Milan in 2009-10.
Career low: Overlooked for the 2006 World Cup as Cafu and Cicinho took centre stage.
Style: Attacking, pacy, a dynamic and modern full-back.
Quotes: "I've never thought as myself as untouchable. I feel really good but I know I need to keep working hard at my game to keep my place in a side as strong as Inter. I'm definitely in the form of my life; feeling good, playing well and appreciating the faith that's been put in me." Maicon on claims he is the best right-back in the world.
Trivia: He was involved in a brawl with David Navarro following Inter's elimination by Valencia in the Champions League. The South American was originally suspended for six matches, but the ban was later reduced to three.
