BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER
With his gleaming white boots, customary wristband and explosive play, Schweinsteiger is an instantly recognisable element of both Bayern and Germany.
'Schweini' has long been identified as a player of no little skill and ability and first broke into the Bayern first team as a teenager in the 2002-03 season. The midfielder has since collected five Bundesliga titles, five German Cups and two League Cups during a trophy-laden career with the Bavarian side in which he has proved a key player for both club and country.
His versatility in switching from the wing to operate in a more central role - sometimes even in the holding position - makes him a vital player for his coaches and he could break Lothar Matthaus' record of 150 appearances for Germany if he steers clear of injury.
Strengths: Schweinsteiger largely operates on the wing, either left or right, but he is versatile enough to provide an option in the centre. He possesses a fearsome shot from range as well as a wicked delivery from set-pieces and his boundless energy serves him well.
Weaknesses: He is often perceived to have an arrogant streak and his impetuous nature has got him into trouble in the past.
Career high: Winning the Bundesliga and German Cup and taking the club to the Champions League final in 2009-10.
Career low: Being shown a red card for pushing Croatia's Jerko Leko in the second game of the group stages at Euro 2008. German chancellor Angela Merkel cautioned him against doing so again.
Style: Dynamic, energetic, direct, a classy midfielder.
Quotes: "I'd rather finish with 90 caps and win the World Cup or the European Championships than end up as the most-capped player without winning any major prize." Bastian Schweinsteiger, September 2009.
Trivia: Schweinsteiger's partner, Sarah Brandner, is one of Germany's most famous WAGS and the model came to the attention of males all over Europe when being pictured in a national shirt, carrying pints of beer during a game at Euro 2008.
