Birmingham goalkeeper Butland was thrust into the spotlight as he was called up to the England squad as cover for the injured John Ruddy ahead of Euro 2012.

Having never played above League Two level, it was a remarkable ascent for a 19-year-old but the experience of training at an international tournament was a major boost to his career.

Butland began his football life at Bristol's Clevedon United and joined Birmingham's academy in 2007. Soon after he was called up to the England Under-16 side and remained a fixture in the national youth set-up despite never making his senior debut for the Midlands club.

Leaving for League Two side Cheltenham on loan in 2011, the goalkeeper played first-team football and returned to the club again the following season - keeping eleven clean sheets in 24 games and helping them to a play-off final - before his incredible international call.

After such media exposure, it was not long before Butland was back at Birmingham and the club chose to cash in on their young talent in January 2013 when they sold him to Stoke for a fee of around £5 million.

Strengths: Tall and imposing, Butland is a big presence in goal and has good speed across his line.

Weaknesses: Inexperienced at the highest level, his temperament will be questioned in the unforgiving light of international football.

Career high: Being called up to England's Euro 2012 squad, despite never having made his debut for Birmingham.

Career low: He must have wondered if he would get his chance after he was sent out on loan in 2011.

Style: Commanding, energetic, a young goalkeeper with a big future.

Quotes: "Remember the name Jack Butland people, Never seen such a frighteningly good young talent in my career. He's got everything and he's only 19." Former Birmingham goalkeeper Ben Foster talks up Butland on his Twitter account.

Trivia: Butland is one of only four players in history who was called up for England while in the lower divisions, but not promoted the following season.
