Powell was on the radar from an early age as he started his career at home-town club Crewe Alexandra at the age of five, before Manchester United came calling 13 years later with an offer that was too good to turn down.

Powell made his first-team debut for Crewe in August 2010, in a League Two game against Cheltenham Town and became the second youngest player ever to appear for Crewe at the age of 16.

His star continued to rise and he cemented his place in the side in the 2011-12 season. In April he became the first player to win every award at Crewe's end of season ceremony: Goal of the Season (for his 30-yard strike in the 4-3 win at Gillingham), Young Player of the Year and Player of the Year. And he finished as the club's top scorer with a total of 16 goals in all competitions.

Manchester United were so impressed they moved for the attacking midfielder and agreed a deal before he starred in the 2012 League Two play-off final at Wembley Stadium. Lucky, as he got rave reviews after scoring a fine goal to send his side up before he moved to Old Trafford.

Strengths: Good vision and strength on the ball, he has excellent passing ability and can also chip in with plenty of goals.

Weaknesses: Inexperienced in the fast-paced Premier League and he is still learning the game.

Career high: Netting a fabulous goal in the 2012 League Two play-off final.

Career low: Powell was sent off after eight minutes in the 7-0 defeat to Shrewsbury Town on August 20, 2011.

Style: Cool, creative, a midfielder with excellent vision

Quotes: "He said to me, 'I wanted to see him. He is athletic he's a good size, he's good physically and he's bright, he knows where people are around him. His clever with his play, he's not just twinkle toes'. Nick's got a brain and a desire and Alex spotted it on the strength of one outing." Crewe's director of football Dario Gradi on what Sir Alex Ferguson saw of Powell, 2012.

Trivia: Powell's transfer could be worth as much as £6 million if various bonuses and targets are hit during his career.
