Edinson Cavani signs extension with Paris Saint-Germain until 2020

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has extended his contract with the French champions until 2020.

Restored to his preferred central-striking berth since the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Manchester United on a free transfer, the Uruguay international has thrived under new coach Unai Emery.

Cavani, 30, boasts a sensational 31 goals from 32 Ligue 1 appearances and he added eight from eight UEFA Champions League outings, as well as another five from four domestic cup appearances.

El Matador has a staggering total of 44 goals in 44 matches across all competitions and is closing on Ibrahimovic's 50-strike 2015-16 season tally.

"I am very happy to extend my contract and my commitment to PSG," Cavani told PSG's official website. "As I have always stated, it was always my clear intention to continue playing for PSG, its supporters and all the staff at the club to make it one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"I am convinced that the club has the potential to attain all its objectives. Together, we will be more and more ambitious in the coming seasons."

Cavani's previous deal ran until the summer of 2018, but since Ibrahimovic left, he has gone from playing a supporting role to the former Sweden international to being the main source of goals.

Les Parisiens have been keen to tie their No. 9 down for longer and the former Napoli man has been linked with a number of moves away in the past, particularly when Ibrahimovic was the top striker at Parc des Princes.

However, PSG Chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi stuck by Cavani when he was not in great form in the past and the Qatari's patience and support has been richly rewarded this campaign.

"This new contract extension reaffirms the huge confidence Edinson has in our project," said the Qatari to PSG.fr. "He is quite simply the best striker in the world at the moment. He is one of the elite strikers in Europe.

"Edi feels great in Paris and has a veritable love affair with the club, the fans and the city. Edi is making history at the club, courtesy of his goals, but also his commitment and ambition.

"Our supporters love the way Edinson always gives everything for the colours, in every minute of every match.

"His signature is a strong sign, for all those that love this club, that PSG can look towards the future with confidence, stability and ambition."
