Thiago Motta unlikely to renew Paris Saint-Germain contract - agent

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta's agent has said the Italian is unlikely to renew his contract with the French champions when it expires at the end of this season.

Motta, 34, is approaching the end of his current PSG deal and speculation has mounted in recent weeks that the former Inter Milan man could leave for nothing now that Adrien Rabiot is close to usurping him in Unai Emery's starting XI.

Alessandro Canovi, Motta's agent, did nothing to calm that speculation and told RadioGoal24: "His contract [with PSG] is about to expire and I really don't think we are going to renew it."

"A Serie A return? It depends but I do not believe he will return to the league," Canovi added. "He has already done everything in Italy, winning the league several times and the treble with Inter."

Although an Italy international, Motta was born in Brazil and has spent his entire professional career in Europe. Finishing his playing days in his native country is a possibility but Canovi said his next club -- if there is one -- must boast a "stimulating project."

"We will look at other solutions [outside of a Serie A return]," Canovi continued. "At 34 years old, we are taking it day by day and it is still very early."

After news of Canovi's words reached France, the agent quickly took to Twitter to calm rumours of a January departure.

"So there are no doubts," he tweeted. "Everything will be decided in absolute harmony with the president Al-Khelaifi and PSG. Five fantastic years. #ThiagoMotta"

Motta's departure would promote Rabiot to one of the three starting midfield roles on a full-time basis and move Poland international Grzegorz Krychowiak up the pecking order.
