NPFL matchday 27: Key talking points

Akwa United celebrate a goal during their NPFL match. Colin Udoh

It was a fascinating weekend of action in the Nigerian top flight, as leaders Plateau United saw their advantage at the top of the table cut.

Akwa United quietly mounting a title challenge

Akwa United firmed up their grip on third place with a deserved home win against Enyimba in Uyo.

The victory was a first for the Promise Keepers in six outings against the People's Elephant, since the last triumph in September 2014.

Credit must be given to the coaching crew led by experienced tactician Abdul Maikaba, who overturned a sluggish start to the season which saw them flirting with relegation in the early days.

They sit pretty comfortably in the top four with a game in hand, separated by five points from leaders Plateau United.

Are Remo Stars down and out?

Remo Stars succumbed to yet another league defeat, a 14th of the season away at Niger Tornadoes on Sunday in Lokoja. Time appears to be running out for the privately-sponsored club who are bottom of the 20-team table.

Their survival chances with 11 games of the season left doesn't look too encouraging, considering the fact they have picked up 24 points at home and three points on the road this season.

The Sagamu-based club have six home games to turn the corner by picking up a maximum of 18 points, but can their revival start with a home win against an expensively-assembled FC Ifeanyi Ubah on Sunday?

Certainly the battle of the privately-sponsored teams will be a thrilling encounter to watch.

Obaje king of penalties

Godwin Obaje has proved himself to be a specialist penalty-taker, converting all six of his attempts this season, the highest return by any player in the league.

The division's top scorer last season with 18 goals netted a customary penalty strike against Katsina United in Nnewi on Sunday, his 10th goal of the campaign.

Somewhat concerning, however, is that statistics show that the Benue State indigene has netted 40 percent of his goals from open play, with 60 percent from the spot.

It's not exactly an encouraging breakdown for a player who reportedly earns six figures monthly in naira.
