Brad Friedel seems determined to extend his playing days well into his 40s by indicating he wants a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp rolled the dice when swooping for Friedel on a free transfer in the summer but the gamble has paid off in style with the American producing a series of top-class displays.

The former Aston Villa man, 40, is contracted to Tottenham until the end of next season but is feeling fit enough to claim he wants to extend his playing career.

"If you can keep yourself free of major injury and you want to keep playing, then you can go much longer than an outfield player could," Friedel said. "It can be done if you want it and I do."

Friedel claims the input of nutritionists and sports scientists make it easier for players to push back the boundaries of their careers.

"These days with all the focus on nutrition and health, together with the less distance we have to cover in training and in matches, why shouldn't a goalkeeper play well into his 40s?" he said. "My body doesn't feel the way someone might think a 40-year-old should feel. I don't wake up every morning and think, 'Oh no, I'm 40, I don't feel like training today'."
