Joleon Lescott believes Manchester City team-mate Micah Richards has the potential to be the best right-back in the world.

Richards, 23, has been in terrific form for City this season, and he continued to impress on Saturday as he helped his club maintain their five-point lead at the Premier League's summit with a goal in the 3-1 victory over Newcastle.

In spite of his performances this campaign, Richards was overlooked by England manager Fabio Capello for the most recent England squad, the Italian instead calling upon Glen Johnson and Kyle Walkers for the games against Spain and Sweden.

But Lescott feels Richards is the best right-back in England's top flight, telling City's official website: "Micah has been in immense form all season. His confidence is really high. He is in the best form of his career and has the world at his feet.

"I would say he is the best right-back in the league just now. If he continues this form he will be the best in the world."
