The agent of Inter Milan's Cristian Chivu claims that the defender could be playing for Real Madrid next season after scotching talk of a return to Ajax.

Chivu, 31, is in talks over extending his contract at the San Siro, but is keeping his options open with the club currently in the midst of a crisis. The Romanian has been linked with Dutch side Ajax, who he played with for four years before moving to Italy, but agent Joan Becali says that he is more likely to join Jose Mourinho at Real.

"Back to Ajax? I'd say he could continue playing abroad, maybe at Real Madrid, " he said. ''I'm talking with three or four big level teams. He can continue playing for four or five years.''

The prospect of joining former Inter coach Mourinho again is a tantalising one, but Becali insists that playing in the correct position is of more importance wherever he ends up.

"Real? Mourinho knows him well. I've spoken with him, we'll see,'' he added. ''The most important thing is that Christian plays as a pure defender."
