Lothar Matthaus has been sacked as coach of Bulgaria just two days before the first anniversary of his appointment.
Matthaus had replaced Stanimir Stoilov after they had lost their first two Euro 2012 qualifiers.
Bulgaria won their first qualifier under Matthaus, a 1-0 victory in Wales, and two draws followed in their next matches against Switzerland and Montenegro.
But a disastrous display in a 3-0 home defeat to England this month, followed by a 3-1 loss in Switzerland, has cost the Germany legend his job.
"Matthaus's contract will not be renewed," BFU president Borislav Mihaylov said. "Bulgaria achieved poor results under him and there's tension between him and the players.
"He lived outside Bulgaria for most of the time and perhaps it also influenced the results and preparation of the national team."
