Lyon ended Montpellier's 100% record in Ligue 1 with a 2-1 victory which moved them within a point of their opponents.
Half-time substitute Miralem Pjanic put the hosts ahead three minutes after his introduction and Jeremy Pied, another replacement, made it 2-0 after 78 minutes, shortly after Montpellier had been reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Younes Belhanda.
Henri Bedimo halved the deficit late on but Montpellier could not find an equaliser.
