Dirk Kuyt believes Liverpool's £35 million signing Andy Carroll can be a handful for Premier League defenders this summer after he impressed in pre-season.

Carroll scored in Liverpool's 2-0 friendly win over Valencia at the weekend - his third goal in six matches this summer - and team-mate Kuyt believes he can have a great season among the other new signings.

"Andy is very strong in the air and you can also play it into his feet. He's going to be top quality for us this season," Kuyt said. "The good thing about us at the moment is we have many attacking options."

Carroll made just nine appearances in the second half of the season after joining the club already injured, but Kuyt thinks he can make an impact once he gets back to full fitness.

"I think it was difficult for Andy when he arrived because he had an injury," Kuyt added. "He played a couple of games and did very well but then had another injury. Now he's had a full pre-season and has scored in his last two games. He's a top quality striker and I'm sure he will do well and score goals for us this season."

Carroll was lucky to escape with only a yellow card following a late challenge on Valencia defender Adil Rami, but Kuyt thinks that once the striker curbs his over-enthusiasm he will be a tough opponent.

"It was a tough tackle [on Rami] and you always have to be careful not to get silly cards,'' he said. ''You don't want to end up getting suspended. The tackle was just something that happens in games. I have no problem with him. Carroll is a very good player, a strong player. I like him.

"He is difficult to mark because he is strong with head and also on the pitch. I don't think too many defenders will like facing him."
