Ajax cruise, PSV rocked

Eredivisie champions Ajax kicked off the new season in impressive fashion as they saw off De Graafschap 4-1 at De Vijverberg.

Ted Van de Pavert put the home side in front but Ajax soon found their stride, with a Miralem Sulejmani brace and further strikes from Derk Boerrigter and Theo Janssen sealing the success.

Marc Janko's first-half penalty was the difference between the sides as FC Twente got their Eredivisie campaign off to a winning start by beating NAC Breda 1-0.

The Austria striker slotted home in the 29th minute at the Rat Verlegh Stadion after Peter Wisgerhof had been fouled by Jordy Buijs. The win continued a fine start to new Twente coach Co Adriaanse's reign after his side edged Ajax 2-1 last weekend in the Johan Cruyff Shield - with Janko again on target from the spot.

PSV Eindhoven slumped to a disappointing 3-1 loss at AZ Alkmaar on Sunday. Maarten Martens and Nick Viergever put Alkmaar in front but an effort from Dries Mertens handed PSV hope.

However, summer signing from Villarreal, Jozy Altidore, put the result beyond doubt with ten minutes left on the clock. There was still time for AZ's Niklas Moisander to be shown a red card.

Elsewhere, ADO Den Haag played out a goalless draw with Vitesse Arnhem at Kyocera Stadion.
