Leg break rules Lee out for nine months

Mears, 28, only joined the Trotters last week, arriving at the Reebok Stadium from Burnley along with team-mate Chris Eagles in a deal worth £3 million.

But he is now facing several months on the sidelines before he will be able to make his competitive debut for Owen Coyle's side after a training-ground incident.

"Ty went in for a challenge and unfortunately suffered the injury," Coyle said. "It was desperately unlucky for him and we will make sure that he is fully supported in his rehabilitation.

"He will go for a check and an assessment in a month and that will indicate more accurately the timescale for his recovery."

Mears becomes the second Bolton player to break his leg in the past five days after Lee Chung-Yong suffered a double fracture of his lower right leg in a pre-season friendly with Conference side Newport County on Saturday - an injury that will keep him out for a minimum of nine months.
