A second examination of the ankle revealed that the damage was worse than first feared. Ribery, key to Bayern Munich's hopes this season, claimed to have been "fortunate" that his left ankle appeared to just be sprained, but Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt has since revealed that there is ligament damage.

The 28-year-old France international will have to wear a cast for five days before the joint is assessed once more and is naturally disappointed at the news after also suffering through injury last season:

"The injury is worse than we thought yesterday," he told www.bild.de. "I don't know why these things always happen to me. I need to wear a cast for five days and then, hopefully, be able to start running again from Monday.''

Meanwhile, Bayern's chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, has slammed Chile international Arturo Vidal for joining Juventus after having an agreement in place with the German club.

"I do not find it a pity that Arturo Vidal did not come," Rummenigge told Kicker. "I would rather not have such players at Bayern Munich."

The deal bringing Vidal from Juventus to Bayer Leverkusen is believed to be in the region of €10.5 million.
