Henderson, 20, has impressed many of the Premier League's biggest clubs this campaign and made his full England debut last year in November against France. The midfielder had previously been linked with a move to Manchester United, but a report in The Guardian on Thursday suggested that Liverpool are on the cusp of snaring his prized signature.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has put a price of £20 million on the homegrown product and it is expected that a deal will be done shortly after Henderson's commitments at this month's Under-21 international tournament in Denmark have concluded.

However, Sunderland have rejected claims that they have already refused a £13 million offer for Henderson to move to Anfield.

Bruce lost England striker Darren Bent to Aston Villa during the winter transfer window, and the sale of Henderson could provide sufficient funds for the Wearside club to build upon last season's 10th-placed finish.

Liverpool, meanwhile, under the guidance of Kenny Dalglish, have also been linked with summer transfers for England internationals Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, along with Blackpool's Charlie Adam.
