Wigan boss Roberto Martinez says his players will be playing for chairman Dave Whelan as they seek to keep their Premier League status intact.

Whelan has backed Martinez throughout his two year spell at the club and will do so again even if the Latics can't get the result they need against Stoke and are relegated to the Championship. However, Martinez hopes that it does not come to that as his side will be fully focused on keeping Whelan's dream alive.

Martinez said: "He [Whelan] represents everything we are at Wigan Athletic. Over the years he has always come up with the special decisions that have made the difference.

"We are all together here. We are here in a way to fulfil his dream and work with what he wanted to achieve. We are a very close football club, every department relies on the chairman.

"This is one of those games that will mean a lot more than just achieving something in the season. It is about allowing his footballing dream to carry on and making sure the chairman can be extremely proud of the people he has got in his football club."

The Spaniard is also confident of avoiding major disruption whatever happens and said: "I don't think the team is going to break up. We have very good financial stability at the club and we have got a playing squad in which everyone is under contract.

"We have had two loan players that have had a massive impact this season, but when you have got loan players you can only make sure they are attached to the football club, enjoy their football and always have memories in the future."
