Tevez handed in a transfer request after becoming disillusioned with his time at Eastlands, but reports suggested that he wanted to return to Argentina, or quit the game altogether.

The City captain came close to leaving the club, but opted to stay and Mancini has now revealed where his preferred destination lay.

''Carlos told us back in December that he wants to go to Italy,'' Mancini said. ''But if he changes his mind, I would be happy.''

Tevez was said to want to be closer to his family and has spent time in Milan recovering from his latest injury getting treatment from Argentina's team doctor.

Mancini also took time to quash talk that he is ready to leave Eastlands, after he was suggested as a possible candidate to replace Luigi Del Neri at Juventus this summer.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: ''I have not received any offers and in any case my priority is to achieve our stated aims with City in order to stay here and fight for the league title next season. I have a good team already but we will bring reinforcements.''
