Ajax close gap as leaders draw

April 10, 2011

Title hopefuls FC Twente and PSV Eindhoven were both held to draws at home as third-placed Ajax closed the gap on the Eredivisie leaders.

Theo Janssen's late penalty earned leaders Twente a 1-1 draw against Roda JC after a thrilling second half at De Grolsch Veste.

Substitute Boldizsar Bodor had given Roda JC a 77th-minute lead, punishing an earlier penalty miss by Twente's Bryan Ruiz.

But Janssen levelled from the spot after Roda keeper Mateusz Prus was sent off for bringing down Ruiz. Twente's Roberto Rosales was then also red-carded in added time.

Second-placed PSV also came from behind to snatch a point at Heerenveen. Jeremain Lens put them ahead in the 58th minute before Oussama Assaidi and Bas Dost looked to have won it for the visitors.

A red card for Wilfred Bouma looked to have ended PSV's hopes but substitute Ola Toivonen levelled in the closing seconds.

Ajax moved within three points of the summit with a 2-0 victory over FC Groningen at the Amsterdam ArenA.

The four-time European champions took almost 70 minutes to make the breakthrough as Serbian forward Miralem Sulejmani put them ahead before Jan Vertonghen added a quickfire second to seal the win.

The result means Ajax have lost just one of their last 10 league matches and keeps them in the title picture with four games of the season left.

Elsewhere, Feyenoord hammered Utrecht 4-0, with Leroy Fer, Kelvin Leerdam, Diego Biseswar and Georgino Wijnaldum on target.
