England captain Rio Ferdinand is set to miss the upcoming European Championship qualifier with Wales at the Millennium Stadium due to a calf injury.

The Manchester United defender has been sidelined since early February and Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled him out of the March 26 international.

Ferguson said: "Rio has been doing a bit of running. He will be ready for the game after the internationals.

"I wouldn't have thought he would have a chance before that. I don't think it would be wise for him to be called up by England. He hasn't played for us since January."

With Ferdinand sidelined along and the expected abscence of England vice-captain Steven Gerrard, speculation has mounted that manager Fabio Capello will offer the armband back to former skipper John Terry.
