Twente beat PSV on penalties

January 26, 2011

FC Twente progressed as the top two in the Eredivisie met in the last eight of the KNVB Beker, securing a 7-6 triumph over PSV Eindhoven in a penalty shootout after the game had ended 1-1.

Midfielder Theo Janssen put Twente ahead from the penalty spot after 70 minutes but a last-gasp leveller from substitute Danny Koevermans sent the tie into extra-time. But with neither side able to find a winner it took spot-kicks to settle it, with the hosts prevailing.

In the other tie FC Utrecht advanced with a 3-2 home win over FC Groningen. Jan Wuytens gave the hosts an 11th-minute lead but Matavz levelled for Groningen.

Dries Mertens put Utrecht back in front from the spot but a penalty from Andreas Granqvist again brought the sides level, but Nana Asare grabbed the winner as Utrecht went through.
