Davids, 37, came out of retirement to join the Eagles in August on a pay-as-you-play deal but struggled to regain his form and fitness after two years out of the game.

The former Juventus star, who made just seven appearances for the London club, wrote on his personal website: "Today I have decided that my journey as a player of Crystal Palace FC has come to an end. I want to thank all the people who supported me and gave me one of the best experiences of my life."

Davids, who won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995 and has played at the highest level with likes of AC Milan and Barcelona, is expected to once again hang up his boots.

Palace boss George Burley said: "We decided it was probably better that we draw a line under him being here.

"He was a smashing lad and I enjoyed working with him but it was a big ask two years out of the game. We've got to look to the future. I'll be looking to try and get someone else in."
