Velez edge Banfield in five-goal thriller

November 8, 2010

Velez Sarsfield moved to within three points of Apertura leaders Estudiantes with a hard-fought 3-2 win at Banfield.

Twice Velez took the lead in the first half, through Santiago Silva and Juan Martinez, but both times Banfield levelled, first through Gabriel Mendez, then, on the hour mark, Marcelo Bustamante.

But substitute Jonathan Cristaldo struck in the 72nd minute, just four minutes after entering the action, to seal the win.

San Lorenzo were held to a 1-1 home draw by Independiente.

Cristian Tula gave the hosts the lead moments after the restart, but German Pacheco levelled seven minutes later, before Independiente had substitute Leonel Galeano sent off late on.

Juan Rodriguez scored after 53 minutes to give All Boys a 1-0 win over River Plate, while Mauro Bellone got the only goal of the game as Colon Santa Fe defeated Tigre.
