Valdes, who has made 73 Champions League appearances for Barca, was taken ill on the morning of the game and has informed Pep Guardiola he will not be available.

The Barcelona coach has responded to the news by calling up Ruben Mino from Barcelona's B team. Jose Manuel Pinto, 34, will start the Copenhagen game.

Valdes has not missed a Champions League game in almost two years. He was rested for a game against Shakhtar Donetsk in December 2008 as Barcelona had already sealed a place in the knockout stages.

However, influential midfielder Xavi has been included in the squad, despite asking to be substituted in Barcelona's 2-1 win over Valencia at the weekend due to pain in his ankle.
