Nicklas Pedersen and Tim Matavz earned FC Groningen a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Excelsior to leave them top of the Eredivisie.

Pedersen was set up by Thomas Enevoldsen for the opener and then turned provider as Matavz netted the second. But the hosts had been given a first-half scare when it took a goal-line clearance from Maikel Kieftenbeld to keep out Benjamin Baltes' effort.

Frantisek Kubik's second-half double paved the way for a winning start for ADO Den Haag's new coach Raymond Atteveld 4-2 against Eredivisie bottom club Willem II.

It was not the most promising of starts for him as Willem II took a fifth-minute lead through Maceo Rigters and held it for most of the first half at the Willem II Stadion. But Aleksandar Radosavljevic hauled ADO back into the match with an equaliser in the 38th minute and the sides were level at half-time.

Kubik gave ADO the initiative, firing them ahead for the first time four minutes after the break. But Willem II rallied strongly and Evgeniy Levchenko fired them level three minutes later to leave the match in the balance.

Kubik's second 10 minutes from time put ADO back in the driving seat and this time there was no way back for Willem II. Dmitry Bulykin wrapped up victory for the visitors in the last minute and give Atteveld the start he had been hoping for.

Vitesse Arnhem held NAC Breda to a 0-0 draw in the night's other match. A fantastic display by Jelle Ten Rouwelaar denied Vitesse all three points as they dominated the contest and created the majority of the chances - but found the NAC Breda goalkeeper in inspired form.
