Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas insists that goalkeeper Manuel Almunia has the complete confidence of his Gunners team-mates and backed the Spaniard to impress this season.

Almunia's future has been the subject of much speculation after Wenger tried and failed to sign Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer before the end of the transfer window.

The Spanish stopper has come under intense criticism in recent seasons for a tendency to make high-profile mistakes, but Arsene Wenger has continued to back Almunia as his No. 1, even making him captain for the 1-1 draw with Liverpool on the opening weekend of the season.

And Fabregas - who has played with Almunia for six years - stressed that, like the manager, the players have faith in the ability of their goalkeeper.

"Manuel commanded the defence very well at Blackburn - but it is not just about one game or two or three," Fabregas said.

"He is a well-loved player among everybody here and performs well for this club. We all wish him a super season and have a lot of trust."
