David Beckham admits that his public axing from the England set-up came as something of a "surprise", but his relationship with Fabio Capello has not been affected by the media storm that followed.

• Capello's retirement plan

Capello was strongly criticised after he said in an interview prior to England's friendly against Hungary in August that Beckham would be too old to retain his place in the England squad, as it emerged that the manager had not contacted the 35-year-old personally to relay the news.

The England boss has since said that the international door is not closed to Beckham though, and the LA Galaxy midfielder is certainly not ready to call time on a career that has garnered 115 international caps.

Beckham is also insistent that his relationship with Capello, who also coached him at Madrid, remains unaffected by the incident.

"Obviously it was a surprise at the time but I spoke to him shortly after that and he explained everything to me and it was brushed under the carpet, so to speak," Beckham told Sky Sports News. "I've always had a good relationship with Fabio and that's not changed.

"Things get said, things get taken out of proportion and turned around but at the end of the day the manager's got a job to do and he's doing it well and the lads are repaying that.

"Like I said, I've always supported him as a manager and the staff he's got down there, and he's always supported me. He's always looked after me in many ways and I've got the upmost respect for him.

"He (Capello) has made me aware all the way through being manager that if you're performing and you're playing well then you have a chance of being in the squad. The thing about my situation now is just getting back on the field and getting back fit, then what happens after that we'll see."

Beckham is now ready to return from an Achilles injury sustained in March, and is expected to take the field for LA Galaxy on Sunday.
